For some athletes, the squat position may not be a feasible option when performing the olympic lifts. Whether mechanical restriction or simply ease of movement disables an athlete from performing a full squat, both the clean and the snatch may be performed using a split foot stance in lieu of the popular squat receiving position. Catching the bar in the clean or the snatch while using the split changes little in the pulling mechanics from the floor, but may be a much easier position to finish the lift. Older athletes will often move to a spilt clean or split snatch to minimize squatting load on the knees. If you are having trouble racking or supporting the bar in the squat try this variation and you may find a new interest in something that may have written off due to restriction.
